The area is occupied since the antiquity, but the first city was established by the Roman empire in 89 AD in the current North-Eastern part of Budapest. The current inhabitants founded their first township here in the 9th Century. Earlier there was no city called Budapest, only Buda and Pest, two separate places on the two banks of the Danube. The city was united only in 1873, the first lasting bridge, the Chainbridge was built in 1848.

The golden age of the city was around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when its current look and today’s streets evolved. Many of the downtown residential buildings date back to these years. aged buildings – from the 15-17th centuries – are located mainly in the Castle area only. Under WW II, aggressive bombings razed many buildings, most of them became re-built since then.

Budapest has a lot of attractions, you can find several World Heritage sites, such as the Andrássy Avenue and the millenium underground (built in 1896 as first in continental Europe), the Danube riverbanks of the inner city and the Castle District with its archaic buildings and small alleys. The most simple way of discovering the city is by taking part in a guided tour.

The spas of the city are also world famous, its geological characteristicsallows thermal waters to come to the surface in the area. This resulted in the establisment of many baths already in the 16th-17th century, when Hungary was under Turkish occupation. Some of these old Turkish spas still can be seen, offering a genuine experience.

Budapest also offers many green spots, one of the most renowned is the Margaret Island (Margitsziget) which is a beloved excursion spot for the inhabitants. Being located in the middle of the city it is easy to reach, therefore many people enjoy the ambiance of this well kept island park.
