Costa Brava: Something for Everyone

The Costa Brava stretches for 100 miles on the Catalonian coast in the North East of Spain, from just above Barcelona to the French border. It came to prominence in the 1950s, when the local government decided that it was a perfect site to develop into a tourist area. It quickly prospered to present top package holiday resorts such as Lloret de Mar, L’Estartit, Tossa de Mar and Blanes.

Roughly translated as the ‘Wild Coast’, the Costa Brava displays an idyllic beauty with the intoxicating aromas of orange and lemon groves filling the air, while its miles of coastline present the weather-beaten caves and cliffs. Bathed in the warm turquoise of the Mediterranean, sightseers often hire boats to seek out the hidden coves and explore the abundance of submerged wrecks nearby. There are many hidden gems tucked in amongst its larger, livelier resorts, and it is home to many small towns such as Cadaques, which sits close to the foothills of the Pyrenees and was a favourite with artists like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali – with a museum dedicated to the latter. Scattered amongst the more modern resorts of Roses and Tossa de Mar there are also the preserved medieval villages of Pals and Peratallada, the historical town of Begur, and small and pretty fishing ports of Sant Feliu de Guixols and Palamos which help provide the local restaurants and bars with some of its first-class cuisine.

The Costa Brava is committed to sustainable development and is protecting its environment along with the growth of its tourist industry, and its diverse wildlife can be seen while diving off the coast of L’Estartit on the Medes Islands which houses the marshlands of L’Emporda and Spain’s first maritime nature reserve. The historic town of Banyoles and the capital city of Gerona, the cultural hub, are other popular attractions.

Ranging from all-inclusive complexes to traditional campsites and from luxury 6 star resorts to authentic villas, there is accommodation to suit everyone in this Spanish region. In the capital city of Gerona, some of the more contemporary hotels can be found, like the modern glass structure AC Palau De Bellavista or the boutique Hotel Llegendes De Girona Catedral that combines a blend of old and new.

Close to Lloret de Mar castle and beach, the more business-oriented 5 star Hotel Santa Marta and the impressive Gran Hotel Guitart Monterrey can be found. While the Santa Marta provides a range of recreational facilities including sport courts and solariums, the Guitart Monterrey also offers a full service spa and health club.

Spa hotels that stand out are the elaborate Salles Hotel & Spa on the beach of Platja d’Aro and near to beach of Sant Antoni de Calonge which offers all the latest equipment and treatments and spectacular views over the Mediterranean. The Hostal de la Gavina is set on the beach in Sant Feliu de Guixols hotel and has attracted celebrities and royalty alike with its idyllic location on the peninsula and traditional Catalan design.  Named as one of the Leading Hotels of the World, the Alva Park Resort & Spa in Platja de Fenals, Lloret de Mar offers an exclusive luxury with oriental design and state-of-the-art facilities set on one of the beach in the heart of Costa Brava. You can get amazing holiday deals with Thomson voucher codes.
