Although handles are not always present in automatic valve models, in brands where they are available, they provide a way for overriding internal automatic controls. Fluids passes through the gadget through internal passageways referred to as ports. Ports vary in number starting from two in most models. Pipes and other components are attached to ports at one or both ends. Attachments are made through threading, compression fittings, cementing, welding, or gluing.

Valves are made use of in almost all industrial processes including processing of sewerage and water, power generation, food production, chemical and plastic production, mining, and oil processing.
